Presenting Indian Music Abroad: A dialog between curators, promoters and performers.

While Indian music has been receiving wide appreciation overseas, it is clear that some forms are more represented than others on most platforms. Despite the Festivals of India that were started in the 1980s, the diversity of Indian music does not seem to have made the crossing. Interestingly, however, collaborative work initiated by non-Indian producers, cultural organizations and artistes, have borrowed from a variety of Indian sources, during recording projects and performances that are mainly conducted in India.

What are the avenues for presenting Indian music overseas? What are the reasons for projecting some musical forms as against the plurality of Indian music? What are the practical problems associated with presenting Indian music overseas? These are only some of the questions that will come up for discussion in the seminar at Baajaa Gaajaa 2011.

The Musical Lens: Film making and music

Music has had a long association with film making. In India, music continues to play an integral part of mainstream cinema not just through background scores but by way of songs. However, outside the world of mainstream cinema, the association between the arts of music and film making does not seem to reach the public eye.

This seminar will make an attempt at understanding the views of filmmakers and will try to throw up solutions to the challenges that the present circumstances pose with regard to aesthetics, production, dissemination. The seminar will also act as a forum for open interaction between musicians and filmmakers, in an effort to understand each other’s roles and situations.

Patronage to Indian Music: Challenges and Prospects

Music and musicians have received support from royal patrons in the past, and subsequently from the urban business and industrial elite and the intelligentsia. Public patronage came in the form of ticketed concerts held by music circles and clubs. The post-independence period saw the government stepping in as a major patron to the arts and various public institutions were established for the purpose. In more recent years, the corporate sector has stepped in to sponsor music festivals.

All of these changes appear to augur well for the performing arts. However, several questions remain unanswered. Is the current extent of patronage as substantial as it ought to be? Does the manner of patronage deter the scope of the arts? Is there a need for a more informed patronage? Can there be an open interaction between the patrons and the practitioners in order to understand their respective points of view? What is the role of event managers, which has sprung up as an intermediary between the corporate sector and the practitioners?

Panelists:
Dr. Rashmi Poddar – Director, Jnanapravaha, Mumbai
Padmini Somani – Founder Director, Salaam Bombay Foundation, Mumbai
Parul Mehta – Director, Ishanya, Pune
Pratima Kirloskar – Pune
Dr. Saryu Doshi – Art Historian, Research Scholar, Editor and Curator
